The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) today announced the official commencement of its new Five-Year Strategic Plan, which took effect on 1 July 2025. This comprehensive roadmap, covering Fiscal Years (FY) 2026–30, will serve as the guiding force for ICANN’s priorities and activities, aiming to strengthen the foundational elements of the global internet.
Developed through a remarkably inclusive process, the Strategic Plan is a testament to collaborative governance. Input was gathered from across the diverse ICANN community, the organization itself, and other critical stakeholders. This broad participation ensures the plan reflects a wide array of perspectives on the internet’s future. Its core purpose is to define ICANN’s long-term objectives and articulate its overarching vision for the coming years.
ICANN’s 2030 Vision: A Trusted Steward for a Unified Internet
The cornerstone of the new plan is ICANN’s ambitious 2030 Vision: “As the trusted steward of the Internet’s unique identifier systems, ICANN is dedicated to strengthening the single, globally interoperable Internet for all.” This vision underscores ICANN’s crucial role in maintaining the technical infrastructure that allows the internet to function seamlessly across borders and devices.
To achieve this vision, the Strategic Plan outlines four key Strategic Objectives. These objectives are designed to steer ICANN’s efforts, emphasizing its commitment to:
- Multistakeholder Internet governance: Reinforcing the collaborative model that brings together diverse stakeholders in decision-making.
- Organizational excellence: Ensuring ICANN operates efficiently and effectively to fulfill its mission.
- Innovation: Adapting to the evolving digital landscape and embracing new technologies.
- Collaboration: Working closely with partners to address shared challenges and opportunities.
Complementing this strategic overview is a detailed Five-Year Operating Plan, which precisely outlines the activities and initiatives required to put the Strategic Plan into action.
A Collaborative Effort for a Shared Future
Tripti Sinha, ICANN Board Chair, expressed gratitude for the collective effort behind the plan’s creation. “On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank everyone who contributed to creating this ambitious and comprehensive plan,” Sinha stated. “In today’s dynamic digital landscape, this new five-year Strategic Plan serves as a road map for ICANN’s continued impact. The plan belongs to all of us, and we each play a role in bringing it to life.” Her words highlight the shared ownership and collective responsibility in realizing the plan’s objectives.
The ICANN Board is committed to ensuring the Strategic Plan remains relevant and responsive. It will undergo annual review and updates to adapt to emerging challenges and seize new opportunities as the internet continues its rapid evolution. Through these ongoing efforts, ICANN remains steadfast in its dedication to preserving the principle of “One World, One Internet,” ensuring a unified and accessible digital space for everyone.
