Lagos, Nigeria – September 21, 2023 – The Association for Information and Communication Technology on Local Content (ICTLOCA) and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) have announced a collaboration to promote data protection in Nigeria.

The two organizations will work together to develop and implement programs and initiatives to raise awareness of data protection among businesses and individuals, and to support the adoption of best practices.

The collaboration is particularly timely given the recent passage of the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR). The NDPR is a comprehensive data protection law that sets out requirements for the collection, use, and disclosure of personal data. On 12 June 2023, the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 (“the Act”) was signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. The Act provides a legal framework for the protection of personal information and establishes the Nigeria Data Protection Commission for the regulation of the processing of personal information.

“We are excited to collaborate with the NDPC to promote data protection in Nigeria,” said Gbolahan Awonuga, President of ICTLOCA. “Data protection is essential for building trust in the digital economy, and we believe that our collaboration will help to ensure that Nigerians are protected when their personal data is processed.”

“We are pleased to partner with ICTLOCA to promote data protection in Nigeria,” said Dr. Vincent Olatunji, Commissioner of the NDPC. “ICTLOCA is an industry-leading voice in the Nigerian ICT sector, and we believe that this collaboration will help us to reach a wider audience and make a real difference in raising awareness of data protection.”

The ICTLOCA and NDPC will work together on several initiatives, including:

  • Developing educational materials and training programs on data protection for businesses and individuals.
  • Conducting public awareness campaigns on data protection.
  • Supporting the development of data protection standards and best practices.
  • Working with the government to advocate for effective data protection legislation and enforcement.
  • Using our local Data Centres in Nigeria to store data. (Operation Store Nigeria Data in Nigeria).

The two organizations believe that their collaboration will play a significant role in promoting data protection in Nigeria and helping to build a digital economy that is both innovative and trustworthy.
