DNS Africa: Charting the Future – ICANN’s New Five-Year Strategic Plan is Here.

The digital landscape across Africa, and indeed the world, is constantly evolving, making the foundational work of organizations like the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) more critical than ever. It is with significant interest, therefore, that DNS Africa notes ICANN’s announcement that its new Five-Year Strategic Plan for Fiscal Years (FY) 2026–30 officially came into effect on 1 July 2025. This comprehensive roadmap will steer ICANN’s priorities and activities for the next half-decade, with profound implications for the global internet – and by extension, for the burgeoning digital economies and communities right here in West Africa and across the continent.

This strategic blueprint is not merely an internal document; it is the culmination of a truly inclusive and collaborative process. The ICANN Board of Directors, in developing this plan, actively engaged participants from across the diverse ICANN community, the organization itself, and various other stakeholders. This multistakeholder approach is a cornerstone of ICANN’s governance model, and it’s particularly vital for ensuring that the unique needs and perspectives of regions like Africa are factored into global internet policy. The plan explicitly defines ICANN’s long-term objectives, all geared towards achieving its overarching vision.

A 2030 Vision for a Unified Internet:

ICANN’s bold 2030 Vision declares its commitment to being “the trusted steward of the Internet’s unique identifier systems, ICANN is dedicated to strengthening the single, globally interoperable Internet for all.” For Africa, where internet access and digital literacy are rapidly expanding, this vision resonates deeply. A single, globally interoperable internet is fundamental to fostering cross-border commerce, enabling access to diverse information, and facilitating global collaboration – all critical elements for the continent’s digital advancement.

The Strategic Plan delineates four core Strategic Objectives designed to realize this ambitious 2030 vision. These objectives underscore ICANN’s unwavering commitment to the principles of multistakeholder Internet governance, organizational excellence, fostering innovation within the unique identifier system, and promoting robust collaboration across its global ecosystem. This strategic framework is further bolstered by a complementary Five-Year Operating Plan, which will detail the specific activities and initiatives necessary for its successful execution.

“On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank everyone who contributed to creating this ambitious and comprehensive plan,” remarked ICANN Board Chair Tripti Sinha. “In today’s dynamic digital landscape, this new five-year Strategic Plan serves as a road map for ICANN’s continued impact. The plan belongs to all of us, and we each play a role in bringing it to life.”

DNS Africa wholeheartedly concurs with Ms. Sinha’s sentiment. This plan is indeed a collective endeavor, and its successful implementation will require the active participation of all stakeholders, including those of us championing the growth and stability of the internet in Africa. The continent’s burgeoning internet user base and its growing contribution to the global digital economy mean that Africa’s voice in ICANN processes, and its engagement with this Strategic Plan, are more important than ever.

The ICANN Board’s commitment to annually review and update the Strategic Plan is also a critical component, ensuring that the organization remains agile and responsive to the ever-evolving challenges and opportunities presented by the digital frontier. As the internet continues its rapid evolution, ICANN’s steadfast commitment to “preserving One World, One Internet” remains a beacon for global digital cooperation. DNS Africa looks forward to actively engaging with this plan, working alongside ICANN and the global community to ensure that Africa’s digital future is robust, inclusive, and interconnected.
