The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) launched the New Generic Top-Level Domains (gTLD) Program to expand the Internet’s Domain Name System (DNS) by introducing new top-level domains. This initiative allows businesses, communities, and organizations to create unique online spaces, offering greater choice and flexibility in domain name registration.
The Vision Behind the Expansion
The New gTLD Program aims to foster competition and innovation within the domain name market. By increasing the number of available gTLDs, the program seeks to:
- Enhance consumer choice: Provide a wider range of domain name options beyond traditional extensions like .com, .org, and .net.
- Enable innovation: Allow for the creation of gTLDs that reflect specific industries, geographic locations, or community interests.
- Promote competition: Reduce reliance on existing gTLDs and encourage new players to enter the domain name market.
Benefits of the Program
The program offers several potential benefits:
- Brand differentiation: Companies can use gTLDs that directly relate to their brand or industry, enhancing their online identity.
- Community building: Organizations can create dedicated online spaces for specific communities or interests.
- Improved navigation: Users may find it easier to identify relevant websites based on the gTLD.
Current Status and Future Plans
ICANN is currently working on the next round of the New gTLD Program. Key developments include:
- Applicant Guidebook (AGB): The AGB, which provides detailed information and requirements for applicants, is expected to be finalized by May 2025.
- Applicant Support Program (ASP): This program offers financial and non-financial assistance to eligible applicants who demonstrate financial need. The application submission period for the current round closed on November 19.
- Registry Service Provider (RSP) Evaluation Program: This program evaluates RSPs before the gTLD application window opens, streamlining the process and reducing redundant testing.
