UN General Debate Focuses on Global Digital Governance and AI Risks.

NEW YORK — Technology policy and digital governance dominated speeches at the United Nations headquarters as the General Debate of the UN General Assembly continued into its second day. Emerging artificial intelligence risks, digital divides between the Global North and South, and the protection of critical digital infrastructure took center stage among world leaders and diplomats.

Cybersecurity and the preservation of peace in cyberspace formed another major pillar of the day’s debate. Leaders called for a renewed commitment to international law and established UN cyber norms to deter threats against essential services. Interventions underscored the critical need to strengthen global defenses against ransomware and state-sponsored attacks targeted at healthcare systems, energy grids, and financial networks.

The day’s proceedings demonstrated a growing international consensus that digital transformation is no longer a secondary economic consideration. From AI containment to equitable global infrastructure, digital governance has firmly established itself as a primary pillar of international peace, security, and sustainable development.
