African and European Unions Mark 25 Years of Partnership.

Addis Ababa, March 31, 2025 – The African Union (AU) and the European Union (EU) are celebrating 25 years of a strengthened partnership, marking a quarter-century of collaboration that began with the first Africa-Europe Summit in Cairo on April 3-4, 2000. This milestone aligns with the AU’s Agenda 2063 and the EU’s Global Gateway Investment Package for Africa, uniting over 1.9 billion people and representing more than 40% of the United Nations’ membership.

To commemorate this significant anniversary, a year-long celebration has been launched, featuring joint outreach initiatives and dialogues focused on addressing shared challenges. These activities will culminate in the 7th African Union-European Union Summit, to be held in Africa.

The strategic alignment of the AU-EU partnership is built upon four key pillars:

  • Prosperity: Fostering regional economic integration and sustainable growth.
  • Peace, Security, and Governance: Promoting peace, security, good governance, and human rights.
  • Investing in Human Development: Enhancing human capital and social well-being.
  • Multilateralism and Sustainability: Addressing climate change and promoting multilateral cooperation.

Both the AU and EU have reaffirmed their commitment to this partnership, emphasizing its importance in addressing global challenges and achieving shared goals.
