Industry leaders from global and African tech giants converged in Lagos for the Africa Peering and Interconnection Forum (AfPIF 2025), a major event aimed at addressing the challenges and opportunities for content delivery in Nigeria. The discussions underscored a unified vision for a more connected and equitable digital future.
The forum brought together key players, including Meta, Open Access Data Centres, Airtel Africa, and Digital Realty, to tackle the critical issues of high bandwidth costs outside Lagos and frequent fiber cuts that disrupt network stability. These challenges hinder the country’s ability to capitalize on its vast population and its youth’s high demand for digital content.
A central theme of the forum was the need to rethink existing business models. Participants discussed innovative strategies such as “sachet pricing”, which would offer daily or weekly data access to a wider user base. The conversation also highlighted the importance of transforming traditional colocation facilities into collaborative ecosystems where content creators and network carriers can work together more efficiently.
To reduce the over-reliance on Lagos as the sole hub for digital infrastructure, companies are actively working to expand their footprint. Meta and the Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN) announced plans to increase infrastructure and interconnection points in other regions, with a particular focus on Port Harcourt.
The event concluded with a strong call for unified collaboration. Speakers emphasized that to truly unlock Nigeria’s digital potential, all stakeholders—from hyperscalers and platforms to carriers and regulators—must coordinate their investments and support, rather than working in isolation. The consensus was clear: Nigeria’s digital future depends on a concerted effort to build a resilient, accessible, and inclusive digital ecosystem.
