Minister Mavetera Outlines Ambitious Roadmap for a Digitally Empowered Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe is on a determined path towards a digitally inclusive and innovation-driven economy, spearheaded by Minister Tatenda Mavetera’s visionary roadmap for digital transformation. The core of this national ambition is the Smart Zimbabwe 2030 Masterplan, a comprehensive strategy designed to place digital technologies at the forefront of public service delivery, economic growth, and international competitiveness.

The Masterplan is built upon eight foundational pillars, creating an operational framework to digitally empower citizens and institutions across diverse sectors. These include Smart Government, Agriculture, Education, Cities, and Transport, all working in concert to foster a technologically advanced nation.

A critical enabler of this digital shift is the National ICT Policy (2022–2027). This policy is instrumental in establishing robust regulatory frameworks that champion digital transformation, promote fair competition, stimulate innovation, and safeguard consumer rights within the digital landscape.

Looking to the future, the Zimbabwean government is poised to introduce a National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy. This strategic move aims to guide the responsible and ethical adoption of AI and other emerging technologies, ensuring that their integration leads to inclusive development while meticulously safeguarding citizens’ rights and privacy.

Beyond policy and strategy, tangible progress is being made in expanding vital digital infrastructure. Over 200 community information centers have already been rolled out, significantly improving access to digital resources at the grassroots level. Crucially, efforts are also focused on facilitating internet connectivity in key public institutions, including schools, clinics, and remote areas, directly addressing the digital divide. To further bridge this gap, Zimbabwe is actively embracing cutting-edge connectivity solutions, such as low-earth orbit satellite technologies, promising to bring internet access to even the most geographically isolated regions.

The roadmap extends beyond just infrastructure, cultivating a vibrant innovation culture across the nation. This is being achieved through strategic partnerships with universities and research institutions, the establishment of dedicated innovation hubs, and the implementation of national digital skills training initiatives. These programs are designed to equip citizens with the competencies necessary to thrive in the evolving digital economy.

Minister Mavetera’s vision culminates in a powerful call to action, urging all stakeholders – from government bodies and private sector entities to academic institutions and individual citizens – to collaborate actively. The emphasis is on co-developing innovations that are specifically tailored to address Zimbabwe’s unique realities and seize its inherent opportunities. The ultimate goal is to forge a connected, empowered, and globally competitive Zimbabwe, where technology serves as the primary engine for inclusive national transformation.
