The West Africa School on Internet Governance (WASIG) 2025 is a capacity-building initiative aimed at empowering West African stakeholders with knowledge and skills in Internet Governance (IG). It is taking place in Abuja, Nigeria, from May 19th to 21st, 2025, preceding the West Africa Internet Governance Forum (WAIGF) 2025.
Objective: To build the capacity of West African stakeholders on Internet Governance issues, particularly those relevant to the region. This aims to equip participants to actively contribute to IG processes at national, regional, continental, and global levels.
Focus: In 2025, a crucial year for AI regulation and governance, WASIG will be a special “Alumni” edition. Participants will work with ECOWAS professionals to refine a final document based on work initiated during the previous year’s school.
Key aspects:
Capacity Building: The school provides training and raises awareness on various aspects of Internet Governance.
Regional Focus: It addresses prevailing and emerging IG issues specific to the West African region.
Alumni Edition: This year builds upon previous work, focusing on producing a final document on a key topic (likely related to AI governance).
Collaboration with ECOWAS: Professionals from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will support participants in refining their work.
Preparation for IG Processes: The school aims to prepare participants to effectively engage in Internet Governance discussions and policy development at various levels.
WASIG 2025 is a significant opportunity for individuals from various sectors in West Africa to deepen their understanding of Internet Governance and contribute to shaping the region’s digital future.
