Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – African ministers have adopted a groundbreaking Continental Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy, aiming to harness the power of AI for the continent’s development and inclusive growth. This initiative, discussed alongside the African Digital Compact, underscores Africa’s determination to leverage new technologies for the well-being of its people while mitigating potential risks.
The Continental AI Strategy provides a comprehensive roadmap for African countries to utilize AI for development, emphasizing an Africa-owned, people-centered, and inclusive approach. Key elements of the strategy include:
- Ethical AI Use: Promoting the responsible and ethical application of AI, minimizing potential risks and ensuring adequate safeguards.
- Accelerating AI Capabilities: Focusing on developing AI infrastructure, talent, datasets, innovation, and strategic partnerships.
- Sector-Specific Roadmaps: Setting clear pathways for AI implementation in critical sectors such as education, health, agriculture, infrastructure, security, and governance.
- Human Capital Development: Emphasizing the importance of developing human capital and strengthening research and innovation ecosystems to support AI advancement.
Ministers emphasized the need to adapt AI to African realities, reflecting the continent’s diverse languages, cultures, history, and geographical contexts. They highlighted the importance of creating an inclusive AI ecosystem and a competitive African AI market to promote homegrown solutions and stimulate economic growth.
The African Digital Compact, discussed alongside the AI strategy, is envisioned as a framework to foster sustainable development, economic growth, and societal well-being through digital transformation. Ministers stressed that capacity building and knowledge transfer are essential to empower Africa’s youth and private sector in the digital economy. They also underscored the importance of considering Africa’s unique challenges in the global discourse on digital technologies.
To further collaboration and strategic planning, a Continental African Artificial Intelligence Summit will be convened. This summit will provide a platform for African nations to work together in shaping the future of AI on the continent.
